Two pre-doc researchers in a project on “The Making of National
Security: From Contested Complexity to Types of Security States”
(funded by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation)

The Chairs of International Relations and Global Governance at the
Geschwister Scholl Institute of Political Science
(Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich) will jointly host a research
project on the contemporary ‘making of national security’. It is funded
by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation and co-led by Andreas Kruck and Moritz
Weiss (for a brief project description, see here:
https://www.gsi.uni-muenchen.de/aktuelles/3_stellenangebote_gsi/en_phd_call_ak_11_23_nib/project_description.pdf).

For this project, we are offering two doctoral researcher positions for
the duration of 24 months (65% of a full TV-L E13 position) with the
option of a contract extension for another 12 months (given positive
project evaluation by the Foundation). The starting date for both
positions is November 1 or December 1, 2023.

Our offer

- 24(+12)-months contract at the level of doctoral researcher (salary
according to the University Employment Scale: TV-L E13, 65%).

- opportunity to conduct, in a motivated and supportive team,
cutting-edge research on a highly relevant topic of contemporary
security politics.

- project-funded research and/or conference trips (about 1-2
national/international trips per year).

- In addition to contributing to the research project, there is the
opportunity to write a PhD thesis (either start a new PhD project or
complete an ongoing one) in International Relations, European Studies,
Global Governance, International Political Economy or International
Public Policy. The thesis should be (broadly) related to the research
project.

project’s research design

collection (i.e. documentary research, expert interviews) and data
analysis; this research will focus on two of the four sectors of
security policy-making specified in the project description –
conventional warfare, military services and logistics, critical
infrastructure, cyber warfare – and cover developments in the US, UK,
France and/or India.

- presenting intermediate and final results at international workshops
and conferences.

- collaboration in writing publications for peer-reviewed journals and
preparation of the final project report.

- no teaching obligations, but opportunity to teach on a voluntary
basis.

ideally with a specialization in International Relations, Security
Studies or International Political Economy.

- strong interest in obtaining a doctorate in Political Science.

- proficiency in qualitative and/or quantitative research methods.

- well-developed analytical skills as well as intellectual creativity.

Additional skills

economy, public policy-making and either digital (security) governance,
protection of critical infrastructures or the military realm are an
asset.

- Country expertise in (security) policy-making of the US, UK, France
and, in particular, India is an asset.

- reliability and ability to work self-independently as well as in a
team.
