We invite paper and panel proposals for:
Section 47 | The Political Economy of the Euro Crisis
The sovereign debt crisis in the Eurozone has dominated policy making
in the EU since 2010. While some crisis countries such as Ireland
managed to overcome the crisis, others such as Greece remain in deep
trouble. Controversies on the management of the crisis and the
conditions for rescue packages have led to long negotiations among EMU
members and to heated debates in the societies of both donor and
recipient countries of aid. While the design faults of the EMU and the
negotiating positions of EMU members have been widely researched, the
dynamics of the crisis, the political economy of the societal
embeddedness of the Euro, and the consequences of the crisis for
democratic governance require further investigation. Thus, this
section intends to summarize the state-of-the-art of the first wave of
research on the crisis and focuses on the ideational, institutional
and material dimensions of the societal embeddedness of the Euro
crisis. How did value-based societal ideas and expectations inform the
policies in crisis and donor countries, and the negotiations among EMU
members? How did the varieties of national socio-economic institutions
shape EMU member state policies? What was the role of domestic
institutions and groups, such as parliaments, courts, economic lobbies
and civil society organizations? This section invites proposals for
panels and papers focusing on the societal embeddedness of the Euro
crisis, on the varieties of institutions and ideational beliefs in the
Eurozone, on the interaction between domestic politics and
multilateral negotiations, and on the social environment of the Euro
crisis.
