Call for Papers
Section: Understanding the Euro Crisis
EISA 8th Pan-European Conference on International Relations
18th - 21st September 2013, Warsaw
Convenor: Hubert Zimmermann (Phillips University Marburg)
  zimmer2d at staff.uni-marburg.de

This section investigates the nature and extent of the eurozone crisis
from the perspective of International Relations and related
disciplines. Concentrating on the international dimension of the
crisis, we will assess the reasons for the striking intractability of
the European sovereign debt and banking crisis, and discuss the future
of Europe's common currency. The mechanisms of the international
diffusion of crisis symptoms, contending beliefs regarding the causes
and potential solutions to the euro conundrum, and transnational
contestation against crisis management form prominent themes in the
section. In addition, the section will consider the impact of the
crisis for the external governance of the euro and the global standing
of the EU. The much-debated democratic legitimacy of the actions
undertaken to stabilize the situation is another prominent theme.

The section aims to bring together scholars from IPE, Comparative
Political Economy, IR and European Studies so as to provide a
comprehensive review of current research on this topic. The selection
of papers and panels will reflect the diversity of interpretations
across Europe, given that the debates of the issue have often a very
specific national character in different countries with different
themes and interpretations being emphasized. Thus, the section seeks
to advance also the conversation across different European research
networks. The section will also feature a roundtable on the crisis
with prominent participants (Fritz Scharpf, Henrik Enderlein, Loukas
Tsoukalis, et.al.)

We welcome panels and proposals on questions such as: What mechanisms,
beliefs, groups and interests sustain (or undermine) Europe's monetary
union? What are the implications for theories of monetary cooperation
and regional integration? What impact had the financialisation of
European economies and the incomplete nature of EU financial markets
on the origins and the trajectory of the crisis? How did the crisis
influence Europe’s standing and influence in the world?
