I am glad to inform you that our project on the theme “Patterns of
transnational regulation: how networks and institutions shaped societies
and markets throughout the 20th C.” got a positive response from the
Swiss National Science Foundation. Several Ph.D. positions will
be funded by the project. One of them is related to the research module
close to your research interests. As the topic is quite sharp, your
expertise on insurance might be an asset for identifying
bright prospective Ph.D. students. Please do not hesitate to
disseminate the information.
The module explores how disparate practices experienced in the emergence
of multinational social benefits networks were consolidated into
standardised and regulated processes expected to be valid for many other
lines of insurance business. It examines the unification of insurance
business in the context of the growing internationalisation of the
service economy. It also provides a first attempt to probe the limits of
transnational private insurance governance against the backdrop of the
current global economic crisis. It focuses on the case of insurance on
life-related issues such as private pension schemes, which appears to be
particularly relevant for research work as they highlight the
controversial political implications of private social benefits*. *The
project addresses the following question: To which extent the early and
ad-hoc experience of coordinating private actors’ practices regarding
multinational social benefits set the stage for the European standards
and regulation to become the avant-garde of the transnationalisation of
insurance services?
